What the New Government Regulations on Efficiency Mean For You

Higher efficiency air conditioning and heat pump standard of 14 SEER will become effective on January 15, 2015. Manufactures, distributors and contractors will be allowed to buy, sell, ship and install non-complaint (13 SEER) products during an 18 month grace period. Once the 13 SEER equipment inventory is sold out then the next choice is the higher priced 14 seer equipment.
What this means to your home and business, our government is mandating higher efficiency from current 13 to 14 SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) across the country and your next system will cost you more money.
Most older equipment is 10 SEER and when a major component fails (evaporator, furnace or air handler, condenser) the entire system has to be replaced to match efficiency. This combined with the 90% phase out of R22 refrigerant in 2015, I wouldn’t wait too long to replace a worn or doubtful air conditioner or heat pump.
